Vacation Activities Highlight
Mt Kilimanjaro is Africa’s highest mountain and the tallest free standing mountain in the world. As you trek towards the snow-capped summit listen out for cackling bird-life and keep your eyes open for various types of monkey. Hike through misty rain-forests, rock-strewn moonscapes and dry, dusty desert. The sense of achievement as you gaze down on the ice fields and distant planes from the roof of Africa is quite simply overwhelming. The Machame route is regarded as the most scenic on Kilimanjaro but is also one of the tougher routes. Over the years the Machame route has earned the nickname 'the Whisky route', meaning it is harder than the 'easier' Marangu route (known as the Coca Cola route because of its popularity).
Vacation Activities Detail Information
Day 1: Mbahe Village, Mt. Kilimanjaro, Tanzania (1,800m)

Upon arrival at the Kilimanjaro International Airport, you will be welcomed by a Fly in Safari Co. representative holding a sign board with your details. You will be transferred from the airport to Mbahe village located in the foothills of Mount Kilimanjaro, approximately 2 hours from the airport. Upon arrival at the private cottages you will check in and have time to settle in. Enjoy delicious “homebrew” coffee, grown and roasted on the farm, and meals made with fruits and vegetables from the garden. Later in the afternoon you will get a full briefing on the climb. If the weather is favorable you will be able to catch a glimpse of the world’s tallest freestanding mountain, Kilimanjaro.

Included: Dinner, transfers, tour briefing (as per itinerary)

Overnight: Mbahe Village Cottages

Day 2: Machame Gate (1,830m) to Machame Camp (3,030m), 10.6 km

After breakfast you get transferred to the Machame gate where you will meet your other guides and mountain crew before entering the Kilimanjaro National Park. You begin your climb at 1,800 meters walking through the lush rainforest of the lower slopes of majestic Mt. Kilimanjaro. You will get the opportunity to admire the magnificent bird life and the many unique flower and plant species, about which your guide will tell you, and with luck, you may observe the blue or colobus monkeys that populate the forest zone. Arrive at your first campsite in the late afternoon, the Machame Camp, situated at 3000 metres above sea level.

Included: All meals & beverages (as per itinerary)

Overnight: Machame Camp, Mt. Kilimanjaro (camping)

Day 3: Machame Camp (3,030m) to Shira Camp (3,850m), 5.6 km

Today is an easy paced acclimatization day. We will hike over streams, a river gorge, and moorlands. Your camp is located on the Shira Plateau, providing expansive views of Kilimanjaro. There is a conditioning hike in the afternoon where you can enjoy the clusters of giant lobelias and senecios that grow at this elevation.

Included: All meals & beverages (as per itinerary)

Overnight: Shira Camp, Mt. Kilimanjaro (camping)

Day 4: Shira Camp (3,850m) to Lava Tower Camp (4,640m), 7.1 km

Today is another important day for acclimatization as we hike for 5 hours to an elevation above 4,500 meters. We will pass through the alpine moorland zone where plants are extremely hardy and consist of lichens, grasses, and heather, to reach Kilimanjaro alpine desert zone. You will have a spectacular view of the steep Western Breach (which we will not be doing on this route). After an early afternoon rest we have a special 2 hour adventure climb up the Lava Tower. This rock scramble will prepare you for the climb tomorrow.

Included: All meals & beverages (as per itinerary)

Overnight: Lawa Tower, Mt. Kilimanjaro (camping)

Day 5: Lava Tower Camp (4,640m) to Karanga Camp (4,040m), 9.5 km

After an initial descent from Lava Tower camp we climb the Great Barranco Wall ‐ not too steep but still an exhilarating challenge which our guides make safe and accessible for everyone by ascending pole pole (meaning “slowly” in Kiswahili). You will be able to see the breathtaking Heim Glacier from the top of the Wall. Descend into the Karanga Valley and then climb again to our camp on a ridge above the Valley, where you will enjoy a well‐deserved rest and your daily afternoon tea and snacks.

Included: All meals & beverages (as per itinerary)

Overnight: Karanga Camp, Mt. Kilimanjaro (camping)

Day 6: Karanga Camp (4,040m) to Barafu Camp (4,680m), 3.9 km

As we begin hiking today the trail turns steadily uphill. Temperatures are noticeably colder and the landscape more sparse as we work our way to Barafu camp. Barafu means “ice” in Kiswahili. Hiking time is approximately 4 to 5 hours. The camp is set on an exposed ridge and is the staging point for our push to the summit. After an early dinner we have a summit briefing and prepare our equipment before resting. At midnight, ideally under the stars and a brightly shining moon, we begin the final ascent to Uhuru Peak.

Included: All meals & beverages (as per itinerary)

Overnight: Mweka Camp, Mt. Kilimanjaro (camping)

Day 7: Barafu Camp (4,680m) to Uhuru Peak (5,895m) to Millennium Camp (3,820m), 13.4 km

We ascend pole pole on the steep switchback trail, drinking plenty of water and tea, refueling with small snacks, and enjoying this trek to Uhuru, the summit of Kilimanjaro, which we will reach around 8 a.m. At this early hour, before the clouds close in, you will have spectacular views of Africa in all directions. After a stay of 20 to 30 minutes with tea, snacks, and plenty of photos, we descend 2 to 3 hours to Barafu Camp for lunch, rest, and to pick up belongings. Continuing downhill 3 to 4 hours to the edge of the Mweka Forest, we reach the final night’s camp ‐ 2,000 meters below the summit! Eat, share your experiences of the climb, and sleep soundly. Congratulations, you touched the Roof of Africa!

Included: All meals & beverages (as per itinerary)

Overnight: Millennium Camp, Mt. Kilimanjaro (camping)

Day 8: Millennium Camp (3,820m) to Mweka Gate (1,640m), 13.6 km; Mbahe Village Farm Cottages

Our last day is another descent of more than 2,000 meters with 4 to 5 hours of hiking to the trailhead at Mweka Gate. The trail is steep in places and within the forest may be slippery if wet. At the gate we will temporarily say goodbye to our mountain crew and enjoy a hearty picnic lunch. The trip leaders will take you back to Mbahe Village Farm for a hot shower and a celebration dinner with the whole team.

Included: All meals & beverages (as per itinerary)

Overnight: Mbahe Village Cottages

Day 9: Mbahe Village Farm Cottages / Departure

You will be transferred to the Kilimanjaro International Airport according to your flight time schedule. The Fly in Safari Company has a variety of tours that can be added as an extension to this Adventure Safari.
