Kariba and the Zambezi

Kariba and the Zambezi Kariba Dam was constructed between 1955 and 1959, forming what was for many years the largest man -made lake in the world. It has become a famous resort for boating, fishing and game viewing. Many of the animals rescued during Operation Noah were released in the Matusadona National Park. Herds of up to 1,000 buffalo and many other wild animals come to this shoreline in the dry weather. Game viewing can be done by boat, canoe, vehicle or foot. By road - Makuti lies 296km north of Harare on the main highway to Zambia and is the last petrol station before entering Mana Pools National Park. Petrol and oil are not available within the park and an adequate supply must be carried by all visitors. Marongora is 16km beyond Makuti and all visitors to the Zambezi Valley and Mana Pools must stop and obtain an entry permit before proceeding. Persons travelling to Mana Pools must leave Marongora no later than 3:30p.m. Six km beyond Marongora, at the foot of the Zambezi Escarpment, turn right on a gravel road. There are three main routes into Chizarira National Park. From Victoria Falls take the Bulawayo road and turn left toward Kamativi at Cross Dete. From Kamativi follow the Binga road and turn right along the Siabuwa road at the 133km peg. Follow this dirt roadand turn right at the 47km peg where there is a sign indicating Chizarira National Park. This undulating road leads you up the escarpment for 20km to the park headquarters. From the Harare/Bulawayo road turn toward Gokwe at Kwekwe. At Gokwe centre, take the Binga tarred road for 120km until you reach a T junction with a sign poost indicating Binga to the left.
