Ruwenzori is a mountainous region in Uganda. It is now officially called Rwenzori Mountains. It is small but spectacular mountain range of central Africa, often referred to as Mt. Rwenzori, located on the border between Uganda and the DRC, with heights of up to 5,109 m. . A high altitude plateau rises up from rainforest with tall bamboo. Africa's 3rd highest peak - permanently ice-capped and rated her most challenging, is also found here. A good region for hiking. The rock is metamorphic, and the mountains are believed to have been tilted and squeezed upwards by plate movement. They are in an extremely humid area, and frequently enveloped in clouds.

Rwenzori Mountains National Park - A national park and UNESCO World Heritage Site located in the Ruwenzori Mountains of Uganda. Almost 1,000 kmin size, there are numerous waterfalls, lakes, glaciers, and the third highest mountain peak in Africa. The park is known for its unusual plant life.

Rwenzori Mountains National Park was established in 1991 and the national park was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1994 because of its outstanding natural beauty.

Rwenzori Mountains National Park is located in southwestern Uganda along Uganda's border with the Democratic Republic of Congo, on the east side of the western (Albertine) rift valley. It is situated in the Kabarole, Kasese, and Bundibugyo districts,5 km from the small town of Kasese.

The park comprises most of the centre and eastern half of the Rwenzori mountains, a mountain range that rises above dry plains, located just above the equator.

The park has a high diversity of plants and trees and there are several endangered species in the park.The park is noted for its botany, which has been described as some of the beautiful in the world. There are five distinct vegetation zones in the park, which change according to changes in altitude.

The park has many species that are endemic to the Albertine Rift system.It contains 89 species of birds. The park's wildlife varies with elevation, and species include forest elephants, chimpanzees, Ruwenzori hyrax, colobus, L'Hoest's monkeys, black-footed duikers, and Ruwenzori turacos.

The park is owned by the Ugandan government through Uganda National Parks. It is protected, although extraction may be sanctioned by a board of trustees.Kasese is the gateway to the park. it has hotels and lodges and is 260 miles (437 km) west of Kampala via Mbarara on a main road. The park has camping, a good trail network and huts for hikers.

The park has excellent trekking and climbing opportunities with spectacular views and unusual scenery. The most popular trek is a seven day circuit of the park.
