Kairouan

Kairouan Kairouan is an important religious center in Tunisia, some guidebooks even call it the fourth holiest city of Islam. This is no doubt an exaggeration, but it is a fact that Kairouan was the oldest center of the Moslems in the Maghreb. Among the major attractions you find the Great Mosque, dating all the way back to around 670 AD. Even if it's been modified and restored many times, the lower part of the minaret is thought to be dating back to the constructions of early 8th century, and if this is true, then it's the oldest standing minaret in the world. Built for the first time 1200 years ago, the Aghlabid basins, are worth the detour just north of town centre. These are no longer serving any use, but was once ...

Bizerte

Bizerte Bizerte is located in the north of Tunisia, approx. 65km north of Tunis. It is the the largest city north of the capital. Bizerte is not on the tourist track so you may actually have a chance to see some real Tunisia here. The main other reasons to come here are the unspoiled traditional quarter of the old port and the presence of a couple of good beaches in the area. The main draw in the old medina is the enormous kasbah. With its massive walls it looks out over the northern side of the entrance to the old harbour. Originally a Byzantine fort built in the 6th century AD, the present fort was built by the Ottomans in the 17th century. There is also a smaller fort called ksibah, which actually also means small fort...

Carthage

Carthage Carthage est delenda - Carthago needs to be destroyed, that's what the Roman Senator Cato used to repeat at the end of every speech. The Romans did what he wanted and flattened the place in 146 BC. After the destruction of Carthage, the city returned to much of its old splendour, but this was first under Roman rule, later it was after the decline of Rome. Actually Carthage survived Rome, and its era stretched over almost twice as many centuries as Rome did. Trying to discover what Carthage, is difficult. Even if the total destruction left some of the structures of Carthage in good shape, the need for building material removed both ancient Carthage and the younger Roman structures. The Punic port is the best pl...
