Cirque de Salazie

Cirque de Salazie The northern coastal road brings you to St Denis, the island's capital that, with 140,000 people, is the largest city in the overseas French departments. Here, on the coastal plain it is easy to imagine you are in provincial France. Everything is so familiar, from the design of the road signs to the brand names on the billboards, and from the urban architecture to the pleasant public parks. At St Andre, you turn inland to climb into the Cirque de Salazie, one of three magnificent amphitheatres that surround Piton des Neiges, Reunion's highest peak standing 3,069 metres above the coastal towns. The Cirque de Salazie is a long, deep, sheer-walled canyon full of twisted hills and valleys, and waterfalls tumble dow...

Piton des Neiges

Piton des Neiges The Piton des Neiges volcano, the highest point on the island at 3070 metres (10,069 ft) above sea level, is north west of the Piton de la Fournaise. Collapsed calderas and canyons are south west of the mountain. Like Kohala on the Big Island of Hawaii, the Piton des Neiges is extinct. Despite its name, snow (French: neige) practically never falls on the summit. There are two medium-difficulty tracks leading up to the peak, one from the Cirque de Salazie and one from the Cirque de Cilaos. They meet at a staffed mountain hut about an hour's walk below the peak. Walkers often arrive there after a long day trek up the mountain, and start out very early the next day to watch the sunrise from the summit....

Cilaos

Cilaos Cilaos is a town and commune of approximately 6000 residents, situated on the French island of Reunion in the Indian Ocean. It is located centrally on the island, in a caldera of altitude 1214 m. The caldera (usually known as the 'Cirque') is also named for the community. The first inhabitants of the cirque of Cilaos were thus black-browns who believed themselves to be at the top of the world and completely safe. However, these first runaways were recaptured very quickly, tracked and hunted by well-organized and well-armed slaveholders. In these runaways' attempts to escape recapture, several were killed. It seems likely that these first runaways created the goat paths that climb most of the mountains on Reunion....

Cirque de Mafate

Cirque de Mafate The Cirque de Mafate is a caldera on Reunion Island (France; located in the Indian Ocean). It was formed from the collapse of the large shield volcano the Piton des Neiges. The very remote and inaccessible cirque was settled in the 19th century by maroon slaves (i.e. slaves who had escaped from their masters), then later by poor white laborers. It owes its name to one maroon leader. The cirque is entirely enclosed by mountains, especially tall cliffs, known as remparts, save for the sole river exiting, the Riviere des Galets (river of the pebbles). Inside the cirque, there are considerable declivities. The ilets are pieces of more-or-less flat lands, on which the hamlets are located. One originality of Mafate...
