Shiretoko World Heritage Site

Shiretoko World Heritage Site The Shiretoko-hanto Peninsula in northeastern Hokkaido juts out into the Sea of Okhotsk. It is said to be the last unexplored region of Japan, and consists of steep mountain peaks covered with virgin forests. Cormorants and white-tailed sea eagles live there, and the whole area has been designated as a national park. The towns of Utoro and Rausu on the eastern side of the peninsula are the starting points for tourists. Visitors can see the whole of the peninsula and its cliffs by boarding a sightseeing boat that departs from Utoro Port. Shiretoko is known as a "Waterfall Kingdom," and many waterfalls can be seen from the sightseeing boat: the warm-water Kamuiwakkayu-no-taki Falls, which gives off steam; Furepe-no-...

Japanese Hot Springs

Japanese Hot Springs The Japanese do a wonderful job of taking a glass-half-full approach to all the geological activity that their archipelago, with its location on the morbidly named Pacific Ring of Fire, is subject to. Rather than dwell on a history of debilitating earthquakes, or the possibility of cataclysmic volcanic eruptions, they just take off all their clothes and let their cares evaporate in the steam of a Japanese hot spring. Known as onsen, these hot springs in Japan can be found in almost every corner of the country, and constitute some of the best sightseeing in Japan. All puns aside, onsen are a great way to relax after climbing Mount Fuji, or at the end of a hectic week of business meetings. A result of the massive qu...

Daisetsuzan Daisetsuzan N.P. is the largest National Park in Japan. It consists of several mountain groups, volcanoes, forests and lakes. It is incredibly good for hiking and skiing. There are many options for hiking here, from a few hours to a week or more across the whole park. There are trails connecting the far south to the far north, also out east. Daisetsuzan is bigger than Kanagawa prefecture and to hike all the trails takes not days but years! In southern Daisetsuzan (Furano Area) you can find fuming volcanoes, spring flowers galore...

Niseko Niseko has been discovered as the powder snow capital of Japan with the ever growing number of Australian and other foreign tourists. This boom has been blown out of proportion by the local press-the vast majority of tourists are still Japanese. Having said that though, over 10,000 ski enthusiasts were supposed to have visited Niseko this season alone. The snow is what brings people - the quality and quantity(over 15 m in a good season!) is fast becoming world renown. Not only Australians but many expats living in SE Asia have discovered the delights of the Niseko area-the snow, people, hotsprings, food and culture all combine to create a unique ski holiday experience. Niseko is located 120km or so from Sapporo -...

Hakodate Hakodate is the largest city in southern Hokkaido. One of the first cities in Japan to be opened to trade, as Yokohama and Kobe there are some signs of foreign influence. Hakodate was also the capital of the short-lived Republic of Ezo in the aftermath of the Meiji Restoration. According to the Köppen climate classification, Hakodate's climate is a humid subtropical climate, but is close to both an oceanic climate and a humid continental climate. As a result the winters though cold, are not nearly as cold as a typical Hokkaido winter and summers are warm, but not hot. Hakodate features four distinct seasons. ...
