Itsuku Shima Jinja Shrine World Heritage Site

Itsuku Shima Jinja Shrine World Heritage Site Itsuku-shima-jinja Shrine, located in Miyajima, Hatsukaichi City in southwestern Hiroshima, is a unique shrine that looks as if it is floating in the sea. It boasts of a solemn and gorgeous architectural beauty in the shinden-style. It was inscribed as a World Cultural Heritage Site in 1996. The main shrine with its red pillars and white walls, along with the symbol of Miyajima, the O-torii Gate in the sea, create a wonderful contrast with the dark green woods and deep blue sea. Most of the main shrine, a National Treasure, was built in the 12th century. Twenty-one buildings are laid out around the main sanctuary, with a Noh stage and other special structures situated among them. All buildings are connected with...

Peace Memorial Park World Heritage Site

Peace Memorial Park World Heritage Site The Atomic Bomb Dome (Genbaku Dome) is the symbol of Hiroshima, a city that advocates peace throughout the world. The dome is located in the city, facing Hiroshima Bay in the Seto Inland Sea, and was originally the Hiroshima Industrial Promotion Hall, built in 1915. While all surrounding structures were destroyed in the atomic bomb explosion, this building miraculously remained standing. In 1996, the dome was inscribed as a World Cultural Heritage Site. Peace Memorial Park is located next to the Atomic Bomb Dome. There you will find the Hiroshima Peace Memorial Museum, a number of monuments for peace, a tower erected for the repose of the souls of the victims of the atomic bomb, a memorial tower, and a fountain with a...

Niigata

Niigata Niigata Prefecture is on the northwest coast of Honshu. It lays in beautiful mountain surroundings on the Echigo Plains and is easily accessible via the Joetsu or Nagano shinkansen (bullet train). Not many foreign tourists get here but the region is famed for the quality of it's rice and sake. Many Japanese families buy these items from here because of their high quality. The region is also steeped in history and tradition. The 'Snow Country' of Niigata is famous throughout Japan and has inspired countless writers, poets and artists. If you want a glimpse of rural Japan through the window of an old one-carriage train, this is the place. Across from Niigata is Sado Island (a former place of exile for outcasts),...

Hiroshima

Hiroshima It was a sunny morning in Hiroshima on August 6th 1945, when the Atomic bomb dropped out of the sky, obliterated the city, and changed the course of world history forever. The atomic flash and the eventual loss of over 200,000 lives have forever linked the city of Hiroshima with the utter ferocity and ultimate tragedy of nuclear holocaust. Today this beautiful city of nearly 3 million, located in Japans southwestern Chugoku region, offers some of the most somber and moving sightseeing in Japan. Though the event will no doubt be seared on the Japanese consciousness forever, the Heiwa Kinen-koen (Peace Memorial Park) located at ground zero of the Atomic bombs explosion is a reminder and moving memorial to those who ...
