Borgarnes Borgarnes is first mentioned in Egils Saga, but there it is called Digranes. That is where the coffin of Kveldlfur, the father of Skallagrmur, drifted ashor. Skallagrmur set up his household at Borg, near the place where the coffin came ashor. Among Skallagrms shipmates was a man named Grani. He got land on Digranes and called his farm Granastair and is said to be the first settler in Borgarnes. No mention is of a settlement in Borgarnes from the days of Grani until the 19th century, when a few houses were built there in connection with trading. Selfoss The biggest town in South Iceland, about 4.900 inhabitants. Situated at the lfus river. About 60 km away from Reykjavik, between Hveragerdi and Hella. Vik Vik is a lovely little town, placed in between high hills that give it a very secluded and cosy feeling. The town gas station is a sure stop for all travellers that continue eastwards through the Myrdalssandur, a big plain of sand and grid left by numorous glacial floods. The black beach of Vk is one of the loveliest ones that are easily reacheble, with a panoramic view of the special rock formation just off the coast. Colonies of artic terns and puffins can be seen at the west end (right side as facing the ocean) of the beach. Akureyri

 
Akureyri Akureyri is the largest town outside of the capital area in Iceland with a population of 15,000. It is located on Eyjafjordur Fjord. It's mostly an industrial town with shipping and dairy industries, and home of Akureyri University. Akureyri also is the site of the second oldest gymnasium (high school/college) in Iceland. Sights include the folklore museum and the botanical gardens. A trip to nearby Lake Myvatn should also be on your list.
