Chios is a Greek island on the eastern part of the Aegean Sea. It is just a few kilometers off the coast of Turkey, close to the city of Cesme. It's a fairly big island. The capital is also called Chios or Chora. The island is noted for its strong merchant shipping community, its unique mastic gum and its medieval villages.

The eleventh century monastery of Nea Moni, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is located on the island.
Other main sights are: Daskalopetra (the teacher's stone) where Homer taught, Byzantine monastery of Moundon, near Diefha, The stalactite and stalagmite cave near Olympoi, The remnants of the prehistoric settlement in Emborios (or Emporios), Byzantine museum of Chios (Medjitie Mosque).
