Delphi

Delphi

Delphi is an archaeological site and a modern town in Greece on the south-western spur of Mount Parnassus in the valley of Phocis. Delphi was the site of the Delphic oracle, most important oracle in the classical Greek world, and it was a major site for the worship of the god Apollo. The name Delphi has the same root word as the modern English Dolphin, and refers to Apollo coming to the site originally (down by the port, of course) in the form of a dolphin.

==== DELPHI - LOCATION

It is located in lower central Greece, on multiple plateau/terraces along the slope of Mount Parnassus, and includes the Sanctuary of Apollo, the site of the ancient Oracle. This semicircular spur is known as Phaedriades, and overlooks the Pleistos Valley.

==== DELPHI - SIGHTSEEING

Delphi is perched on a mountain, with a spectacular set of views who's beauty has been remarked on from ancient times to modern.

Temple of Apollo - The ruins of the Temple of Apollo visible today date from the 4th century BC are of a peripteral Doric building. It was erected on the remains of an earlier temple, dated to the 6th century BC which itself was erected on the site of a 7th century BC construction attributed to the architects Trophonios and Agamedes.

Treasuries - From the entrance of the site, continuing up the slope almost to the temple itself, are a large number of votive statues, and numerous treasuries. These were built by the various states those overseas as well as those on the mainland to commemorate victories and to thank the oracle for her advice, which was so important to those victories. The most impressive is the now-restored Athenian Treasury, built to commemorate the Athenians' victory at the Battle of Salamis.

Delphi was also considered by the ancients as the Center of the World and there was a stone that marked the exact spot.
