Chartreuse

Chartreuse The Chartreuse is a regional natural park lying partly in Savoie and partly in Isere. It is very green with forested pre-Alpine hills, rushing streams, cliffs overhanging the narrow roads, and delightful mountain meadows with a plethora of spring flowers. There is a tourist office in St Pierre dEntremonts, an attractive little town with a camping municipal near the centre and walks in all directions....

Meribel

Meribel Meribel was founded by Scotsman Colonel Peter Lindsay in 1938 when he built the first lift (a 31-seater fixed rope sled that was installed above Les Allues). His aim was to create a purpose built ski resort, which remained faithful to the mountains that surrounded it. Though Meribel has grown into one of the great ski resorts and is at the heart of the largest and, for many, the finest ski area in the world, it has remained faithful, to this day, to Peter Lindsay's aims. All the buildings in the town are constructed in the traditional Savoyarde style from wood and stone, making Meribel one of the most attractive ski resorts in France. There is something for everyone in Mribel, convivial bars and every type of r...

Queyras

Queyras The Queyras Regional Natural Park is south of Grenoble and Briancon and to the far east of France bordering on Italy. It enjoys a micro-climate of its own and has sun for over 300 days in a year. It is much less frequented and somewhat lower than the better known areas further north in Savoie and Haut-Savoie but it is extremely beautiful with some of the best Alpine flower meadows in France. Walking up towards Monte Viso (in Italy) from the far east part of the area, you will be unlucky if you dont see a number of marmots and hear their piercing whistle....

Normandy and Brittany

Normandy and Brittany Normandy is a very beautiful part of France that has lots to offer to the visitor. Old towns, sandy beaches, the Mont-Saint-Michel, they are all there. Rouen, the capital, is a very beautiful old town. To explore it well you would need at least two days. Giverny is a small town. What brings you here is the gardens of the French painter Monet. If you have some knowledge of his paintings a walk through the gardens is great: you see impressionist paintings alive and all! Normandy is also famous for its apple brandy called Calvados. A visit to a cellar to taste a few of these wines is recommended. Honfleur is one of the most pretty harbour towns imaginable. It's been a long time favourite with professional and no...

Bayeux

Bayeux With 15,000 inhabitants Bayeux is just a small town, although it is the capital of the Bessin region. The main reason to come here is the world famous Bayeux Tapestry. Famous all over the world, the Bayeux Tapestry is in fact a XIth century linen hanging, embroided with various colored wools. The impressive size of this tapestry - 70m long and 0.50m high - along with its considerable artistic and historical merits, make it a unique and worldly renowned masterpiece. Similar to a picture book, it shows through successive images the Conquest of England by William, Duke of Normandy, who became William the Conqueror, King of England, after the famous battle of Hastings in 1066. The beautiful work of this embroidery (pro...
