Auxerre

Auxerre Auxerre is a commune in the Bourgogne region of central France, between Paris and Dijon. It is the Prefecture (capital) of the Yonne department. It is a commercial and industrial centre, with industries including food production, woodworking and batteries. It is also famous for the wine produced in the neighbourhood, including the renowned Chablis. Auxerre was a flourishing Gallo-Roman centre, Antissiodorum through which passed one of the main roads of the area, the Via Agrippa (1st century AD) which crossed the Yonne River (Gallo-Roman Icauna) here. In the third century it became the seat of a bishop[1] and a provincial capital of the Roman Empire. In the 5th century it received a Cathedral. In the late 11th-e...

Chartres

Chartres Chartres is less than 100 km west of Paris. A visit to the city can be combined with many different itineraries. The castles of the Valley of the roses are close by, Normandy & Brittany and Normandy & Brittany are not too far either. The cathedral of Chartres is your main reason to come. It is probably the most complete gothic cathedral complex in the world. The old center around the cathedral is very nice as well, with many old houses going back to the middle ages....

Le Mans

Le Mans Le Mans is mainly known for the 24 hours car race that is held there annually, but the town itself is quite interesting as well. There are many old half timbered houses in the historic centre, parts of the city walls that date back to Gallo-Roman times can still be seen and the Cathedral of St. Julien is stunningly beautiful....

Ajaccio

Ajaccio Ajaccio, located on the west coast, is the birthplace of Napoleon Bonaparte and the residence where he was born has been turned into the Bonaparte Museum. The impressive Cathedrale Notre Dame de la Misericorde is the place where he was baptized in 1771. Before you set off for one of the villages in the Cinarca Valley with their wine slopes or for a visit to the volcanic stones of Scandola, make sure to visit the Fesch Museum. It is known for its fabulous collection of (amongst others) Italian Primitives....

Burgundy

Burgundy Burgundy is not just a region in France. It stands for a lifestyle: the good life! Drink a glass of wine, eat some delicious food and take your time to sit back and relax. If this kind of life is appealing to you, there is no better place to experience it than in Burgundy itself. Dijon is the capital of Burgundy and the best place to start exploring the region. In the city you will find many monuments that date back to the period when Burgundy was one of the more powerful states in Central Europe. Beaune is a bit further to the south and is mostly famous for its hospice. One of the oldest hospitals in Europe and built in the characteristic style of the region. There is also a canal that crosses Burgundy (Cana...

Champagne

Champagne Located between Paris, Belgium, Luxembourg and Lorraine, the French region of Champagne-Ardennes is famous for its bubbly wine: the one and only real champagne. But there is of course much more to do and see than just the caves where you can taste these. The north of the region is a hilly land with many woods, the French Ardennes. It's a perfect place to go for hiking and other outdoor activities. In the centre, the Marne department is the most densely populated area of the Champagne. The city of Reims is of course the number one tourist attraction with its famous cathedral. Further to to south, the Aube department has a lot of lakes and small rivers where water sport enthusiasts can find anything they like. The...

Fabulous Rivers Doubs

Fabulous Rivers Doubs The Department of Doubs is home to some of the best river scenery in all France. The Loue is described separately but the Doubs, itself, the Lison, the Hrisson and the Dessoubre all present outstanding valley views. The falls of the Herisson should definitely be on your must visit list but you may prefer not to arrange this for a weekend - masses of French people and their children will be there to appreciate it and it's noisy - like NOISY! The sources of the Lison and the Dobs are other special places. The Dessoubre is more unsung but tis source at the Cirque de Cosolation should on no account be missed....

Loue Valley

Loue Valley This is a wonderful valley in the Department of Doubs. Its source is immensely picturesque with pools and waterfalls and just about every mile is a delight. A splendid camp site is described under accommodation for Franche-Comte. The village of Ornans is worth a visit and the stretch from the source to Ornans may well be the very best - but don't miss the rest!. As well as very picturesque houses overhanging the river, it has a museum devoted to Courbet, who did much painting in this area....
