The Dahlak Islands

The Dahlak Islands The Dahlak islands are great for scuba diving, sailing and fishing. The archipelago of some 200 islands is located south-east of Massawa and can be reached from there. Since the islands are a National Park you can't just go there but need to arrange your trip through a tourist agency that takes care of the permits. Charter yachts are available for hire in Massawa. Only four of the islands are inhabited and the total population only numbers about 2,500 of which most live on Dahlak el Kebir. The inhabitants still maintain their traditional lifestyle of fishing and herding goats and camels. Some islands have shores lined with mangrove trees or salt bush. Shoals and submerged corral reefs, a spectacular marine lif...

Massawa

Massawa Massawa is the main port of Eritrea. The city is located on two islands just off the coast as well as on the mainland. The different parts of the city are connected by two causeways. Before Eritrea's independence, Massawa used to be the headquarters of the Ethiopian navy. It was fought over by both sides during the war - and has been badly damaged. The town still has great charm though, especially at night when the little alleyways between the Turko-Egyptian and Italian buildings come alive. One of the foremost attractions of Massawa, both day and night, are the bars and restaurants. The mainland is not the most interesting part of the city. It consists mostly of residential quarters. Taulud island has a few inter...

Asmara

Asmara Asmara is the capital of Eritrea. It is located some 60 km inland at an altitude of 2432 meters. It is a lot cooler and more pleasant than Massawa on the coast. The city is the cleanest city in Africa. Walking in the streets of Asmara surrounded by palms colorful trees makes you feel in paradise. It is a place that must be visited. The city is a nice mixture of Italian colonial buildings and Eritrean architecture. Asmara's very diverse cultural heritage is obvious: three of the most prominent landmarks in the city are the Catholic Cathedral, the Al Khulafa Al Rashiudin Mosque and the ENda Mariam Coptic Cathedral. Not far from the Cathedral is the very busy shuq district, with its stalls of fruits and vegetables,...

Qohaito

Qohaito Historians debate whether or not the ruins of Qohaito were once the inhabited walls of the ancient town of Koloe, a commercially important place during the good times of the great Aksumite kingdom. Even if it wasn't, the city's impressively large remains - covering an area of 2.5km (1.5mi) by 15km (9mi) - are testament to its once-great stature. Though only about 20% of the ruins have been excavated, it'll still take you half a day to pick your way through the digging's main sights. The four columns and assorted rubble of the Temple of Mariam Wakiro are thought to have begun life intact as an early Christian church and are surrounded by the dusty remains of a half-dozen other temples. To the north of here is an und...
