Virunga National Park

Virunga National Park This got listed in the UNESCO World Heritage List and is a protected piece of land. What you will see here are a diversity of Congo's native floras and faunas. Among the most popular animals to see here are its mountain gorillas as well as its hippopotamuses. Virunga National Park formerly known as Albert National Park is one of the most biologically diverse protected areas on the planet. Half of all the biodiversity in sub-Saharan Africa can be found in Virunga. The park is also a geologic wonder and contains two of the world’s most active volcanoes. The park was founded primarily to protect the mountain gorillas living in the forests of the Virunga Massif that were controlled by the Belgian Congo. Later, Virunga ...

Kinshasa

Kinshasa The capital and largest city of Congo with 9 million inhabitants is a large, sprawling city on the Congo River directly across from Brazzaville, Congo Republic. It is one of the craziets places on the planet right now. When things return to normal there, be sure to visit St. Annes Cathedral (and the art market nearby), the botanical gardens, the Aviators and Stanley monuments and the ethnological museum at Lovanium University. Also spend some time people watching and walking through both the old and new sections of town to look at the various shops. In the Gombe district, the most affluent part of town, upscale shops and restaurants can be found. At night, visit the restaurants and nightclubs in the Matonge ar...

Brazzaville The capital city of Brazzaville is situated on the west side of Malebo Pool on the River Congo. It is a nice city, pretty laid back, with nice markets (especially Oluendze and Moungalito) to stroll around on and lively bars to have ad drink. Sights to see include the beautiful Basilique St Anne, the colourful suburb of Poto Poto, the Temple Mosque, the markets at Oltreruendze and Moungali, the National Museum, the Municipal Gardens and the house constructed for de Gaulle when Brazzaville was the capital of Free France. There is also a beautiful golf course at the Cit du Djou....

Impfondo

Impfondo Impfondo is the capital of the Northern Region of Likoluala. It is located approximately 350 miles North of Brazzaville and is on the West side of the Ubangui River. The town has approximately 25,000 inhabitants; approximately 10-20 people are Europeon. The Native language is Linguala and a there is a missionary hospital operated by a family called the Harveys. Rebel soldiers are still active in this area as of April, 2006; in fact there is a rebel camp I saw from my kayak about 4 miles upstream on the DRC side of the Ubangui from Impfondo. The rebels buy supplies in Impfondo and I was told by one of the Surveillance Officers that they will occasionally capture and hold for ransom people from the town. When you enter ...

Pointe Noire

Pointe Noire Pointe-Noire is the main town on the coast. Go here for the beaches and the lively evening market. Several good beaches are close by in the region known as the Cte Sauvage. Around 20km (12 miles) from the city are the villages of Loango and Diosso. Loango was the main embarkation port for slaves and it is estimated that more than 2 million people were transported from here. The Gorges of Diosso, spectacular cliffs formed by the erosion of the sea and the wind, are worth visiting....
