Karera Falls

Karera Falls The falls of the Karera river are in Rutana province, in the municipality of Musongati, 3 km from the capital area of the Shanga zone and 12 km from the high road n° 8 connecting the urban centres of Gitega and Rutana. There are four falls in the Karera river, swelled by a branch from the Mwaro river coming in from the west. The latter, parallel to the second fall in the Karera, forms a downstream with this one, the 4th which has the most powerful concentration of all the falls. Karera Falls is a famous waterfall of Burundi and is one of the popular Burundi tourist attractions. The adventurous traveler will fall in love with the uniqueness of the wonderful locales of Burundi. Karera Falls in Burundi is blessed wi...

Kibira National Park

Kibira National Park Situated at the top of the apex Zaire-Nile, with its 40,000 ha of preserved forest land, is the largest completely untouched natural area in Burundi. Its wild life constitutes a real shelter for chimpanzees, baboons, cercophitecus (a monkey), and black colobes scattering away to the approach of human beings and defying all laws of equilibrium and gravity. The park is crisscrossed by a network of 180 km of tracks and paths mainly used by guard car patrols and motorized tourists. The guards of the park will scout you in the wood undercover where you will be able to discover the fascinating attraction of the primeval forest and the charming songs of birds. Our mountain chains hide thermal springs, and the access to the p...

Rusizi National Reserve

Rusizi National Reserve The Natural Reserve of Rusizi will be your first visit in Burundi for the simple reason that it is very near the capital city of Bujumbura. The River Delta extends over 500 ha of vegetation made of Phragmites Mauritianus. It is a natural shelter for few families of antelopes and hippopotamuses that come here in quest of grazing land. At the end of the track if you are lucky enough you may meet with a few crocodiles fast asleep on the golden sand of the river banks. The Rusizi Palmgroves (situated on the Cibitoke road 10 km away from Bujumbura) is also an exceptional landscape that will no doubt make your mind drift away from your day to day preoccupations. It offers to the visitor a rich vegetation completely adapted ...

Bujumbura

Bujumbura Bujumbura is the capital of Burundi. The city is located on the shores of Lake Tanganyika, about one day's drive north of Ujiji, Tanzania (Kigoma) where Stanley and Livingston met and where Stanley spoke the famous words Dr. Livingstone I presume With a population of over 500,000 inhabitants, it's a pretty busy place. A 10-year civil war ended in 2005, and nearly all of the country lives in relative peace. The area was colonised by Germany at the end of the 19th century, and there is still architecture dating from that period of Burundi's history, including the Postmaster's House. Other attractions include three museums and the Islamic Cultural Centre. There are excellent cafs and restaurants throughout the city. The...

Saga Beach

Saga Beach Although it's got nothing on nearby Kenya and Tanzania, Burundi's beaches along the coast of Lake Tanganyika are surprisingly attractive. The sand is white and powdery, and the waves should keep the Bilharzia at bay. Saga Beach, which is the most developed stretch of sand along the lake, lies about 5km (3mi) northwest of the capital. Although it used to be known as Plage des Cocotiers (Coconut Beach), most locals now refer to the area as Saga Beach (pronounced Sagga) in honour of the Saga Beach Resort. This popular complex has several large restaurants and a brilliant beachfront bar that turns out cold Primus beers at bargain prices. It draws in huge crowds on the weekends, and the whole complex rocks on as a club ...
