Gaborone Gaborone is Botswana's capital city and its commercial hub. It's located in a valley on the Notwane River, in the south-east corner of Botswana, close to the border of South Africa. Gaborone was named after Kgosi (Chief) Gaborone who led the Batlokwa tribe into the area in the 1880's. The small town grew into the administrative center of Bechuanaland, a British protectorate (1885 -1966). When Botswana gained independence in 1966, Gaborone became its capital. Gaborone is a fairly affluent city, with shopping malls, restaurants, some nightclubs, decent hotels and a University. It's a small city, not very lively or vibrant but quite safe, tidy and relaxing. Gaborone Game Reserve: Possibly one of the few national r...

Maun Maun is Botswana's tourist capital. It is one of the busiest centers in the country and a real travel hub with daily flights from Gaborone, Victoria Falls, South Africa and Namibia arriving at the small airport. Maun is a perfect gateway into the Delta - the main attraction in the region. Within few hours of travel from Maun, travellers can find themselves in the Okavango, Moremi Game Reserve and the Chobe-Zambezi Area. The village has a small community museum. The best time to go is during the winter months from May to October when there is little or no rainfall and the days are warm and cloudless. Nights can be cold though so take a jacket. November to April can be very hot, with most of the rainfall between...

Kalahari Gemsbok National Park

Kalahari Gemsbok National Park The Kalahari Gemsbok National Park is located between the borders of Namibia and Botswana. The park covers an area of a little less than 10,000 square kilometers. The Kalahari Gemsbok National Park and the adjacent Gemsbok National Park of Botswana together occupy as much as 36,000 square kilometers. Since there is no barrier separating the two parks, the animals move freely from park to park. Today, the Kalahari Gemsbok National Park forms Africa's first transfrontier park with the Gemsbok National Park in Botswana, facilitating the seasonal migration of wildlife in search of water, and the movement of free-roaming predators. The new 38000 km 2 park, known as Kgalagadi ('land of thirst'), represents an increasin...

Kalahari Desert

Kalahari Desert Derived from the Tswana word Kgalagadi, meaning the great thirst, the Kalahari is one of the world's most extensive mantles of sand that extends south into South Africa, west into Namibia and north into Angola and Zambia. This Kalahari sand covers the hollow basin of Botswana and forms a flat plain that covers nearly 70% of the country. The Kalahari Desert is something of a misnomer as it is not really a desert. It is a semi arid zone, distinctly different from a true desert region. A strange, yet essential feature of this region is the pans. These are either round or circular and consist of hard, gray clay. They are shallow hollows, which gleam, in the harsh sun of the Kalahari Desert, and yet these pans provide ...
