Aruba

Aruba Aruba is a lively island with high-rise resorts and posh casinos lining its white-sand beaches. You'll find plenty of things to do, too: sunbathing, world-class windsurfing and waterskiing by day, and discos, cabarets, dinner shows and high-stakes gambling at night. Aruba was acquired by the Dutch in the 17th century. However, it's no longer officially a member of the Netherlands Antilles group. Since 1986, it has been a separate entity within the Kingdom of the Netherlands . But because of its proximity to Bonaire and Curacao , the other members of the so-called ABC Islands, many people continue to lump them together. Actually, all three islands have been influenced as much by Venezuela . Aruba is just 24 km (approx....

Oranjestad

Oranjestad With its charming Dutch-colonial architecture, Oranjestad (pop. 30,000) is a wonderful place to explore on foot. Be sure to walk along the harbor, where Venezuelan ships sell fresh fish, produce and spices at a waterfront market. Other sights include the 17th century Fort Zouman, the Archaeological museum and the Numismatic museum. Across from the fort is Wilhelmina Park, a seaside park off L. G. Smith Boulevard (just east of the town square) that has pleasant gardens and a statue of the Queen Mother. Allow about two hours to see downtown Oranjestad. Outside Oranjestad are a few other attractions worth visiting. For a panoramic view of the island, we suggest climbing to the top of Hooiberg (the Haystack), located 6 ...

Arikok National Wildlife Park

Arikok National Wildlife Park This National Park covers almost 20% of Aruba, mostly its rugged and dry interior. The best way to explore the divi divi trees, aloe and iguanas that populate the park, is on foot from a well-worn hiking trail. The park is always open, and there is a good lunch cafe on the northeast coast. For a bit of soft-adventure spelunking, head to the Guadirikiri Caves. Often filled with harmless bats, the caves' eerie sunlight patterns and pirates' lair history help visitors get in touch with their swashbuckling side. It's recommended you bring a flashlight; if you can't bring one they are available for hire at the entrance to the caves. ...
