Garni

Garni The main reason to come to Garni is the two thousand years old basalt Temple of the Sun. The location of the temple is impressive, with a gorge that is 300 meters deep just below it. The temple was fully restored in 1976, and is surrounded by Ionic columns. Next to the temple is a Roman bath, complete with a mosaic floor and ancient plumbing. Garni is usually seen on a day trip from Yerevan, along with Geghard. You should take a guided tour down the gorge to a ruined church complex called Havutz Tar. This is about one hour and a half hike each way. You pass through seven small mountain peaks, and this magnificant valley opens up in front of you. There is also a natural spring not far from the complex, wher...

Alaverdi

Alaverdi Alaverdi is an industrial and mining town at the bottom of the Debed gorge in the northern part of the northern province of Lori, quite close to the border with Georgia. At the site of the present day Alaverdi a bridge was built in the 12th century and the settlement only arose in 18th century when copper ore was found. The town with its typical Soviet style appearance is not very interesting to visitors but it's a convenient place to visit nearby monuments, e.g. Haghpat, Sanahin, Odzun etc. If you enjoy hiking, take some time explore the area. Any road heading up a hill will offer you spectacular views and a different perspective of the area. There are a few marshutni connections with Yerevan each day, a ride...

Dilijan

Dilijan Nestled in the heart of the forests of northern Armenia, Dilijan is the epitome of quaint. Home to many famous composers, artists and cinematographers, this reclusive town of 23,000 boasts a historic refurbished city center with rows of houses with typical early twentieth century interiors and others displaying handicrafts or musical instruments. This popular vacation destination is like a piece of Switerzerland sequestered within the Armenian highlands. Several places you should see if you are in Dilijan. Proceed north towards Ijevan, there is a road that reads Hagartsin. This is a beautiful drive to a church complex, composed of three standing churches, one completely ruined one and an old dining room that wa...

Gegharkunik

Gegharkunik Zanazan is an exquisite restaurant in Tspatagh village, with breathtaking view to Lake Sevan. A tasteful blend of ancient and modern, showcasing Armenia's proud heritage. Perfect for parties and gatherings, or just a quiet dinner for two. The chef specializes in regional cuisine and Armenian gastronomy and will cater to boldest epicurean expectations. Located some 65 kilometers from the Sevan peninsula's rustle and bustle, Zanazan stands out from most of other dining places in the area for its secluded and quiet location, stylish traditional design, cuisine and ambiance. You can enjoy traditional Armenian cuisine in the medieval dining hall or on the open terrace with its spectacular view over the lake....

Gavar

Gavar Gavar is the regional capital of Gegharkunik. It was an industrial town but now is working to establish itself in the new globalized economy. In the center of Gavar, the church was built in 1903 and was the tallest church in Armenia until recent times when newer churches were built. Four kilometers from Gavar is Noradus which is an impressive khachkar (stone cross) cemetary. Hayravank is also very close which dates to the 9th century and has a storied history. In the rocks to the north side of the church, one can find ruins dating back a thousand years and a cave which has remains removed from it which dated back five thousand years. In the villages of Gavar, one can find similarly old churches and in the villag...

Geghard

Geghard The monastery of Geghard was named after its most famous religious artifact, the lance that was said to have pierced the side of Christ. Although the lance has been moved, there are still reasons enough to still visit Geghard. The buildings of this fascinating monastery were carved from solid granite. A total of four churches were hewed out of the hillsides and valley. The oldest dates from the 1200s (dont miss the two carved lions over the doorway). Animal sacrifices take place outside the church on Sundays. The site also has a great location, with a small waterfall nearby and great views over the surrounding countryside. It is possible to see Geghard in conjunction with Garni on a day trip from Yerevan. Not...

Ani

Ani Earliest History Bronze and Iron age settlements have been excavated on the site, so have possible Uruatian buildings. There is re-used classical masonry in the citadel walls and the remains of what is probably a Zoroastrian fire temple. Ani is first mentioned by Armenian chroniclers in the 5th century A.D. as a strong castle built on a hilltop and a possession of the Kamsarakan dynasty. In the middle of the 7th century Armenia was invaded and conquered by the Arabs. The ethnic makeup of the population was little changed by this invasion, but it destroyed the existing power structures and paved the way for the eventual emergence of new ruling dynasties. By the end of the 9th century Armenia had regained most of he...
